12.15 - 12.30 ”Beirut as a living lab of micro-scale resilience to multifaceted and protracted urban crises”
JIHAD FARAH, Urban Strategic Planning and Governance Expert, UNDP
This presentation examines Beirut as a living laboratory of urban resilience amid infrastructural collapse, governance paralysis, refugee pressures, and recurring crises. Following a brief overview of recent urban development trends, it focuses on two practices with particular relevance to architecture: retrofitting micro-housing and deploying rooftop solar systems. The talk highlights how micro-scale social, spatial, and technical strategies can generate viable solutions for securing housing and energy access in a city facing unaffordable markets and chronic power shortages. While Beirut represents an extreme case of instability, the practices and insights discussed offer valuable lessons for strengthening urban resilience in both developing and developed contexts.
