The presentation will revolve around the question of what is “Egyptian” architecture, today and tomorrow. This question shall be explored in light of three different architectural typologies in three different contexts and three different structural systems and materialities, all designed by Waleed Arafa. The Basuna Mosque and Community Center in the south of Egypt, completed in 2018, the Maison d’Egypte Student Residence in the International University City in Paris, completed in 2023 and finally the Citadel of Cairo: Seat of Design Power architectural installation, in the historic Citadel if Cairo, completed in 2024. This exploration will address issues of future possibilities of local and hyper-contextual practices of architecture and their relationship with heritage as a source, while engaging present and expected future challenges such as sustainability and cultural identity.
