"The Holy Redeemer Church of Las Chumberas: Innovation Through Constraints"

FERNANDO MENIS

Founder of FERNANDO MENIS Architecture Studio, Spain

The Holy Redeemer Church of Las Chumberas shows how architectural innovation can grow out of limited resources, using modular construction funded gradually by the community and volumes inspired by the island’s volcanic landscape. Through inventive use of concrete, local stone, and natural light, the project transforms constraint into a resilient and symbolic contribution to the neighborhood’s identity.

09.35 - 11.50 I  Session: Architecture Innovation & Research

”Impact Build: Industrialized robotic construction for hybrid timber-earth structures”

LAUREN VASEY & KUNALJIT CHADHA

Researchers Gramazio Kohler Research Group at ETH Zürich, Founders of the ETH spin-off “ImpactBuild, Switzerland

Impact Build introduces a new model of sustainable construction that unites material circularity with robotic fabrication to achieve impact-driven profitability. The presentation will show how excavated earth—normally treated as waste—can be transformed into a durable and expressive architectural material through Impact Printing, a patented robotic process that deposits and compacts earth at high velocity to create semi–load-bearing structures without formwork or chemical additives. The result is a low-cost, low-carbon, fully recyclable building system with strong fire-resistant and acoustic performance. Because the process is digitally controlled, each component can be uniquely shaped and textured at no extra cost, expanding the possibilities for contextual, materially grounded design. The lecture demonstrates how robotic precision and material intelligence can reshape both the ecological and economic future of construction.

”Foldcast. Less Concrete, More Design”

FABIO AMICARELLI

CEO & Co-Founder of Foldcast,Switzerland

This presentation will introduce Foldcast’s pioneering approach to reducing the environmental impact of concrete construction through digitally produced paper formwork. With concrete responsible for 8% of global CO₂ emissions—and up to half of it wasted due to traditional, rigid formwork systems—the session will demonstrate how Foldcast’s method can cut both material waste and carbon output by as much as 50%. Attendees will discover how this innovation merges sustainability with structural optimization and offers new architectural design possibilities, showcasing a viable pathway toward more efficient and responsible concrete construction.

”Unreinforced Concrete Masonry”

ALESSANDRO DELL'ENDICE

Senior Researcher at the Block Research Group (BRG), Institute of Technology in Architecture at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

JOHANNES MEGENS

CEO, incremental3d GmbH, Austria

Partner Presentation

ALUKOENIGSTAHL

STEFAN SIMION, Presales Manager

”Lightweight Construction Beyond Mass Reduction”

LUCIO BLANDINI

Director Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK), Stuttgart, Germany

This presentation introduces ILEK’s full-scale research prototypes that redefine lightweight construction with the goal of reducing material use, waste, and carbon emissions. Featuring projects such as the adaptive D1244 tower and several filigree concrete structures, the lecture will show how digital tools in design and fabrication can generate innovative, resource-efficient architectural solutions. Key topics include adaptive steel systems, lightweight textile façades that collect rainwater and mitigate heat islands, zero-waste 3D-printed sand formwork, advanced concrete strategies with mineral hollow bodies and basalt reinforcement, and new façade retrofitting methods using cork, aerogel, reused timber, and vacuum glazing.
